In March '10 vacancies broke above 20,000 and maintained
this level through April, a strong showing in a month
disrupted by Easter and school holidays.
Advertised vacancies are now 30% above the monthly lows of
2009. As we predicted last month, the March Quarter
Unemployment figures dropped due to the availablity of all
those extra jobs.
We're still a long way from the 30,000 vacancies per month
experienced through 2007.

than before the recession, and most sectors continue to have a
large over-supply of workers. This includes skilled trades,
like NZ registered electricians and plumbers, that once
struggled with shortages.
Skillled tradespeople in the building and construction
sectors were hard to find during the last building and
property boom.

refurbished buildings required more and more electrical and
electronic devices and systems.
Now, two years later, there are dozens of skilled
trades-people applying for every vacancy, and companies with
work can pick and choose staff.
