THE VACANCY REPORT

Vacancies AND Unemployment Falling!

Chart - Job vacancies and Unemployment 2008-2010

After rising month on month through 2010, advertised job vacancies fell in November for the first time this year. This reflects a regular seasonal pattern as many employers delay hiring until the New Year.

However at the same time the Ministry of Social Development says unemployment numbers are now dropping by several hundred a week.

We believe those people coming off the unemployment benefit are getting work in the traditional "summer jobs" in retail, hospitality and on the land. It's also likely increasing numbers are leaving for Australia, where huge infrastructure projects are generating big demands for staff.

Falling unemployment figures suggests there will be less people available to fill vacancies in the New Year, so if you need to strengthen your team the best time to act is NOW!
